Rondo Expresses Interest in Free Agency

ESPN-Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo says he hasn’t given much thought to whether he will explore unrestricted free agency when his contract expires after the 2014-15 season, but he acknowledged Friday there are aspects of it that intrigue him.

“It’s kind of like, I would say, maybe college recruiting,” Rondo said after practice. “I’m pretty sure a lot more goes into it in the NBA. A lot more money is spent.

“I’ve heard stories, guys getting called right at midnight. It’s something that I haven’t experienced. I may want to go through it. I haven’t thought about it at all.”

Well this is just horrible news for the Celtics. Rondo was obviously a key part of the Celtics future and if this is true there is only one thing you can do with him. You have to trade him before the trade deadline. There is no way around it. You have to get something in return for him. If you are going to get draft picks you want the pick to be in this draft. Rondo will get offered big money on to play on better teams in the 2015 offseason. And if he is saying he wants to test free agency then you have to move him.

A move which I have brought up in the past is trading Rondo to the Houston Rockets. In return we would get a first round pick, Jeremy Lin, and Omir Asik. In my opinion the Celtics would still be getting the short end of the stick but at least we are getting something for him.
