Rajon Rondo has been cleared to return to full contact practice and is expected to return to game-action in January.
Obviously this is fantastic news for the Celtics. Rondo is a true NBA point guard, something this team is in desperate need of. He is a guy who can move the ball around, but can also take the ball to the rim. His ability to do take the ball to the rim should open up some outside shots for guys like Jordan Crawford and Avery Bradley. He will be able to set Jeff Green up in better positions which will give him better chances to score. I still believe Jeff Green can be an elite player in this league, and I think he will show us this once Rondo is back setting him up with better looks.
This season, Jordan Crawford, who has for the most part been the Celtics point guard, has averaged 5 assists per game. Last season, Rondo averaged 11 assists per game and 14 points per game before his injury. In other words, Rondo averaged a double-double per contest last season. That just shows how big of a part Rondo is for this Celtics team. He is a guy who can not only distribute the ball to other guys, but he can score as well. He can create his own opportunities and he can create opportunities for other teammates. Rondo is also a weapon on defense also, averaging 2 steals a game last year. Rondo will only help the leagues ninth ranked defense so far this season.
So what does this mean for the Boston Celtics?
As of today, the Celtics sit on top of the Atlantic Division with a 11-14 record and are holding the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference. Rondo returning only makes this team better, and I believe it makes them a contender in the Eastern Conference. Rondo offers this team a true point guard, which is the missing piece in the puzzle when it comes to the Boston Celtics. Guys like Jeff Green, Jordan Crawford, Jarod Sullinger, and Avery Bradley can carry the scoring load for this team. How do I know that? Because they have been this season. I’m telling you all this team needs is a point guard, and they will be getting one of the best in the NBA back come January. Watch out for the Boston Celtics come playoff time in April, because they will be right in the thick of it.
